  • At least 30 people died as a result of a Russian missile strike on an apartment block in Dnipro.

  • At least 68 people were killed in a Yeti Airlines plane crash in Nepal.
  • The death toll of the Russian missile strike in Dnipro rose to 40 (see 1/15).
  • 8 people were wounded in a shooting at a block party in Fort Pierce, Florida with people celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

  • Defeated Republican New Mexico legislature candidate Solomon Pena was arrested for conspiring with and paying 4 men to carry out 4 shootings at the homes of 2 Democratic county commissioners and 2 Democratic state legislators following his claims of alleged election fraud.
  • China recorded its first population decline in over 60 years due to its “one-child policy” that limited births for decades.
  • Greta Thunberg and other climate activists were detained while protesting the destruction of a village to make space for coal mines. Following the arrest, Thunberg was released after an identity check.
  • The White House called on Speaker McCarthy to make public the concessions he agreed to with other Republicans in order to win the Speakership. 
  • Rep. George Santos was assigned to the House Small Business Committee and the Science, Space, and Technology Committee (see 1/11).
  • Republican Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar received their news committee assignments, after Democrats and multiple Republicans removed them from their committees in 2021 due to extremist comments.
  • At least 17 people, including Ukraine’s interior minister, were killed in a helicopter crash in Kyiv.

  • Jacinda Ardern resigned as prime minister of New Zealand.
  • Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced the company’s plan to lay off 10,000 workers in March.
  • The U.S. Supreme Court denied a request by a group of New York gun dealers to block the state’s law to regulate firearm purchases.

  • U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced a pilot program, called “Welcome Corps,” which allows groups of at least 5 individuals to apply to sponsor refugees.
  • Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis banned the AP African American Studies course for the state’s high school students, claiming it violates state law and “lacks educational value.”

  • Former President Trump withdrew his lawsuit against New York Attorney General Letitia James (see 1/6).
  • 5 Memphis police officers were fired following the traffic stop that led to the death of Tyre Nichols (see 1/10).

  • The Labour Party chose Chris Hipkins to become New Zealand’s next Prime Minister.
  • 3 active-duty Marines were arrested for participating in the Jan. 6 insurrection.
  • Ron Klain announced that he will step down as President Biden’s chief of staff.
  • The Justice Department discovered additional classified documents from President Biden’s Wilmington home.
