- North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ordered increased missile production in preparation for the annual joint military drills by South Korea and the United States.
- The National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland of Niger, the military council that began ruling after the presidential guard removed ousted President Bazoum in a coup d’etat, announced that it would charge Bazoum with “high treason and undermining the internal and external security” of the country (see 8/8).
- Javier Milei, a far-right libertarian congressman, received the most votes in Argentina’s presidential primary election.
- 1 person was killed and 8 were wounded following a shooting at the Shah Cheragh shrine in Shiraz, Iran.

- A Fulton County grand jury indicted former President Trump and 18 allies on 41 counts, accusing Trump and his associates of lying to the state government and lawmakers and knowingly participating in “a conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome of the election in favor of Trump.” (see 8/1).
- Russia’s central bank raised interest rates by 3.5 percentage points in an emergency meeting after the ruble crashed.
- 6 White former Mississippi police officers pleaded guilty to state charges for the racist assault of 2 Black men (see 8/4).
- Arkansas Gov Sanders signed an executive order banning AP African-American Studies in the state’s public schools.

- Former President Trump’s property manager at his Mar-a-Lago residence pleaded not guilty to federal charges related to Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents.
- Deja Nicole Taylor, the mother of a 6-year-old boy who shot his first-grade teacher in a Virginia school, pleaded guilty to felony child neglect (see 4/10).

- A federal appeals court panel ruled that mifepristone should remain legal but prohibited prescriptions by telemedicine and distribution through the mail (see 4/21).
- Samuel Miele, a campaign aide to Rep. Santos who impersonated House Speaker McCarthy’s former chief of staff, was charged with wire fraud and identity theft.

- Maui Emergency Management Agency Administrator Herman Andaya resigned after facing criticism over not sounding emergency sirens as the wildfires continued to spread.
- Former President Trump’s lawyers asked U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan to set the start date for the federal trial on the former president’s efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results to April 2026.
- At least 36 Nigerian soldiers were killed and 7 were wounded after armed gangs ambushed the soldiers and the crash of a helicopter sent to the scene (see 8/14).

- At least 7 people were killed and 90 were wounded during a Russian missile strike in Chernihiv, Ukraine.
- A federal judge declined a request from former President Trump to delay the defamation case from E. Jean Carroll (see 8/8).
