  • Citizens were ordered to evacuate the city of Kherson due to the fear of the advancing Ukrainian counteroffensive.

10/24

  • Rishi Sunak will become the U.K. prime minister after both Mordaunt and Johnson withdrew from the race (see 10/23).
  • The Oxford High School gunman pleaded guilty to 24 charges that carry up to life without parole.
  • Russia’s defense minister, Sergei Shoigu, announced that the war in Ukraine is leading to an “uncontrolled escalation,” following the defeat in Kherson.
  • Former Minneapolis police officer J. Alexander Kueng pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter for the murder of George Floyd.
  • U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thomas agreed to temporarily pause Senator Lindsey Graham from testifying in the 2020 Georgia election interference (see 10/20).
  • 2 people were killed in a shooting at a St. Louis high school.

  • Adidas ended their deal with Kanye West, a deal that made the company billions, following West’s continuous antisemetic remarks (see 10/9).
  • Rishi Sunak became the U.K. prime minister after meeting with King Charles III (see 10/24).
  • At least 9 people died in Bangladesh due to a cyclone that hit the country. The natural disaster has since forced the evacuation of approximately a million people.
  • A Russian judge upheld WNBA player Brittney Griner’s verdict.
  • Democrats withdrew their letter to Biden that urged the president to contact Russia directly in order to end the war in Ukraine.
  • Oz and Fetterman compete in discussions including abortion in the Pennsylvania Senate debate.

10/26

  • Protesters gather at Mahsa Amini’s grave to mark 40 days since her death, while being met with opposing Iranian security forces.
  • The United Nations climate chief reports that governments’ current climate plans are inadequate in preventing the predicted 1.5 degrees Celsius rise in global temperatures from the 2015 Paris Agreement.
  • Former Trump administration chief of staff Mark Meadows must testify before a Georgia grand jury concerning his role in the attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
  • A Michigan jury found three men guilty of aiding a conspiracy to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The prosecutors claimed that the 2020 plot was planned due to opposition of COVID-19 restrictions.
  • Senator Bob Menendez is under federal criminal investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New York.

  • Republican U.S. Senate candidate Herschel Walker, who is openly against abortion with no exceptions, faced a second allegation of pressuring a woman to have an abortion and paid for the procedure.
  • The U.S. economy’s gross domestic product grew at a 2.6% annual rate.
  • U.S. mortgage rates rose to 7.08%, the highest it has been in 20 years.

  • Elon Musk officially bought Twitter for $44 billion. The billionaire proceeded to fire the company’s CEO and CFO.
  • Paul Pelosi was attacked by Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco home. The attacker was identified as David Depape and reportedly confronted Paul Pelosi and shouted, “Where is Nancy? Where is Nancy?”
  • Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen finalized their divorce.

  • At least 6 people were wounded outside of a Pittsburgh funeral.
  • Unaware that RBC television was live on air, military expert close to the Russian Defense Ministry Ruslan Pukhov said, “We all know the drones are Iranian,” revealing the false denials by Moscow and Tehran.
  • At least 151 people died and around 75 were injured at a Seoul Halloween crowd crush.
